Fox ESS has launched AirGate in Australia, a DIN-rail unit that combines an MCB, changeover switch, metering, bypass switch and a CT into a single device for whole-home battery backup. The launch was reported by trade title Electrical Connection, which carries the company’s claim that the unit can cut wiring requirements by at least 50% compared with a conventional whole-home backup install, and that the saving flows through to installation cost.
That figure is the manufacturer’s, not an independent test result. BCN doesn’t test products, and the launch material carries no pricing, no local availability date and no third-party benchmark against it.
Five devices on one rail
The pole count is the headline number for anyone who’s ever tried to squeeze a backup retrofit into a board that’s already full. AirGate takes four poles on single-phase installs and six on three-phase, which Fox ESS says is there to reduce switchboard space requirements.
Metering is handled by a 6-CT self-adaptive arrangement with what the company calls AI Phase Self-Adaptation, designed to work out the electrical connection status on its own and cut down manual configuration during commissioning.
A wireless gateway is also on the roadmap. It’s optional and it’s planned, not shipping, so nobody should be pricing a job on the assumption that comms wiring disappears.
What it’s actually replacing at the board
Done the traditional way, a whole-home backup install isn’t one component. It’s a changeover or transfer arrangement, protection ahead of it, CTs clamped on the incomer, a metering path back to the inverter, and a manual bypass so the house can stay live while someone services the battery. Each of those is a separate device, separate terminations, separate space on the rail.
That’s the labour AirGate is aiming at. Fewer discrete devices means fewer terminations to make, fewer to torque, fewer to check, and fewer to explain to the next sparkie who opens the board in five years.
The phase-detection pitch is aimed at the other time sink: three-phase commissioning, where CT placement and phase pairing have to be right before the system will meter properly. Whether the self-adaptation lives up to that on real Australian boards is something installers will find out on the first hundred jobs, not from a launch release.

The install is still licensed work, whatever’s in the box
Nothing about a consolidated device changes who’s allowed to touch it. Fixed electrical wiring, including switchboard work, requires a licensed electrician in every Australian state and territory, and the install has to comply with the AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules. Where the backup sits alongside a solar or battery system, accredited installation is what lets the owner claim federal small-scale certificates.
The practical read for a contractor: a 5-in-1 block only saves time if it fits the boards you actually work on, integrates with the inverters you already stock, whether that’s Tesla Powerwall, Sungrow or Enphase, and is supported when something goes wrong at year four. Check the device against your state regulator’s requirements and the manufacturer’s own installation instructions before you quote a retrofit off the spec sheet, and weigh it against typical home battery installation costs before locking in a price.
What to watch
For a quoting sparkie, the numbers that matter aren’t in this announcement yet: landed price, stock availability, the compatibility list, and when the wireless gateway lands. Until those turn up, treat the 50% wiring claim as a target to test on your own first job, then price the second one honestly.
