One Australian apprentice will get up to $3,000 towards tools and equipment under a new grant from Melbourne jewellery business MDT DESIGN, open to apprentices in any recognised Australian trade and closing at 11:59pm AEDT on 30 November 2027.
The MDT DESIGN Australian Apprentice Tool Grant was reported by trade publication Electrical Connection, which said the grant is open to electricians, carpenters, plumbers, mechanics, chefs, hairdressers, horticulturists and jewellers, among others. One recipient will be chosen and announced on 14 December 2027.
There’s no application fee, no resume, no academic transcript and no long form to fill in. What applicants have to do is write their best apprenticeship story in 100 words or less: something they built, made, fixed or created, a mistake they learnt from, something a mentor drilled into them, a hard job they eventually cracked, or a moment from the apprenticeship that stuck.
Eligibility is narrow in one respect only. Applicants must be Australian residents doing a recognised Australian apprenticeship, and they must still be apprentices when applications close on 30 November 2027. Anyone selected has to produce evidence of their apprenticeship, and applicants under 18 need consent from a parent or legal guardian.
Judged on the story, not the luck of the draw
MDT DESIGN says entries will be assessed on the authenticity and originality of the story, the applicant’s enthusiasm for their trade, what they’ve learnt so far, and how the tools or equipment they’re asking for would help them develop.
That last criterion is the one most apprentices will skim past, and it’s the one that matters. The grant is skill-based with no element of chance in choosing the recipient, so a vague “I’d buy some tools” line is dead weight next to an applicant who names the gear and says what job it unlocks.
What $3,000 covers on the tools
Apprentices carry the cost of building a kit at exactly the point in their working life when they’ve got the least cash to do it. Year one is the pinch: the basics have to be bought before the apprentice wage catches up, and the good gear gets bought twice if the cheap version goes first.
“I’d buy some tools” line is dead weight next to an applicant who names the gear and says what job it unlocks.
Three grand doesn’t kit out a business, but it moves a first or second-year apprentice a long way up the ladder in one hit. For a sparkie that’s the difference between borrowing the boss’s test instrument and owning a proper one, plus insulated hand tools that aren’t hand-me-downs. For a chippy it’s cordless gear and a decent saw instead of whatever was on special. For a plumber it’s the press tool or the drain camera that stops being someone else’s to book out.
One grant, one recipient, a country full of apprentices. The odds are long and worth being upfront about. Entering costs nothing but a paragraph, which is a better return on 20 minutes than most things an apprentice gets asked to fill in.
Applications stay open for more than a year, which is long enough for a first-year to become a second-year and write a better story. Apprentices weighing it up should keep their training contract paperwork handy for the evidence check, and check what other support they’re eligible for through the federal Australian Apprenticeships program while they’re at it.
