Installing gutters on an Aussie home, what's involved and when to call a roofer

Replacing gutters is one of the most-quoted roof jobs in Australia. Here's what's involved, what a roofer charges, and when DIY makes sense (and doesn't).

Cost (AUD) $25–$95

Gutters are unglamorous and easy to ignore until they fail. Failed gutters channel water into your eaves, roof cavity, and walls, causing the most expensive water damage in the house. Replacement is unavoidable every 25 to 35 years for most Aussie homes.

When gutters need replacing

  • Visible rust holes, water dripping through
  • Sagging sections holding standing water
  • Gaps at joints letting water past
  • Overflowing during normal rain (suggests slope problems, not just blocked)
  • Fascia boards behind gutters are rotting (water is escaping)
  • Water stains down exterior walls below the gutter line

A roofer or builder can inspect and tell you replace vs repair. Inspection $150 to $300 typically.

DIY possibility, single-storey

If you’re confident on a roof and the house is single-storey, gutter replacement is real DIY territory. Materials from Bunnings, Mitre 10, or a roofing supplier:

  • Colorbond gutter in 6m lengths
  • Brackets at 800mm centres
  • Stop ends (left and right)
  • Drop outlets for downpipes
  • Pop rivets and silicone sealant for joints

Tools: drill, rivet gun, snips, spirit level. Plus ladder and basic fall protection.

A confident DIYer does a single-storey 4-bed house gutter replacement in 1 to 2 days. Save $1,500 to $3,500 in labour.

Why two-storey gutters are not DIY

  • Falling 6 to 8 metres kills you
  • WorkSafe Australia requires fall protection (harness, scaffolding, edge rails) for any work above 2m
  • Working at height for hours fatigues your judgement
  • Insurance doesn’t cover DIY injuries from heights

Two-storey gutter work needs a licensed roof plumber with scaffolding. Worth every dollar of the labour cost.

State plumber licensing for gutters

Roof plumbing (gutters, downpipes, flashings) is regulated separately in Australia. Most states require a roof plumbing licence (an endorsement on a general plumber’s licence, or a stand-alone licence in some states). Verify your contractor:

  • Has a current roof plumbing licence
  • Has public liability insurance ($10M minimum)
  • Is providing the right gauge Colorbond (0.42 BMT minimum for residential)
  • Is fitting brackets at the correct spacing for your wind zone

For coastal sites (within 1km of saltwater), specify Colorbond Ultra. Standard Colorbond rusts faster in salt air. Ultra costs 20 to 30% more but lasts 50% longer in that environment.

Maintenance to extend gutter life

  • Clean leaves twice a year (autumn and spring) at minimum
  • Check for sagging after big storms
  • Hose out the gutters once a year to flush silt and debris
  • Touch up minor scratches in the Colorbond paint with manufacturer-matched paint
  • Trim overhanging branches that drop leaves
  • Inspect downpipe outlets for blockages

Clean gutters last 30+ years. Neglected gutters fail in 15. The annual hour of maintenance pays back in years of service life.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace gutters in Australia?

$45 to $95 per linear metre supplied and installed for Colorbond gutters. A typical 4-bed house has 50 to 80m of gutter, total $2,500 to $7,000. Add downpipes ($150 to $300 each, typically 4 to 6 of them). Add rotten timber fascia repair if needed.

Can I install gutters myself?

Single-storey homes with safe roof access, yes for a confident DIYer. Save $1,000 to $3,000 in labour. Materials available from any building supplier. Two-storey or higher needs scaffolding, fall arrest, and is roofer territory.

How long does gutter replacement take?

One day for a typical single-storey 4-bed house with a 2-person crew. Two days if scaffolding is required, fascia is rotten, or the roof is complex.

How long do Colorbond gutters last in Australia?

25 to 35 years in most Australian conditions. Coastal areas (within 1km of saltwater) see faster degradation, 15 to 25 years. Trees overhanging the roof accelerate rust through trapped leaves and moisture. Annual cleaning extends life significantly.
