Western Sydney University is leading a new Australian Research Council training centre that will develop high-quality recycled building materials from demolished concrete and digital platforms that track how buildings perform. The centre comes with funding for seven PhD scholarships and two postdoctoral research positions.
The centre, formally the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for digital platforms in the Net-Zero Building Ecosystem Lifecycle and known as NØBEL, was launched in front of researchers, industry leaders and government representatives, Infrastructure Magazine reported. Australian Research Council Deputy Chief Executive Officer Anthony Murfett was among those in attendance.
“NØBEL represents exactly the kind of ambitious, industry-relevant research collaboration that the ARC’s Industrial Transformation Training Centre program is designed to support,” Murfett said.
He said the model was about closing the gap between the lab and the job.
“Bringing together researchers, industry and government will help accelerate the development of practical solutions for Australia’s transition to a net-zero future.”
What happens to the old slab
One of the centre’s research areas is technology to turn demolished concrete into high-quality recycled building materials, with the stated aim of cutting construction waste sent to landfill and lowering the carbon footprint of future projects.

It also shifts the shape of a maintenance week. A building that tells you a plant item is drifting is a building that generates scheduled work orders instead of after-hours breakdown call-outs. Whether owners pay for that or keep running gear to failure is the part no research centre controls.
